SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) – Police are calling it a bizarre turn of events in Shelby Township, where it turns out a car that crashed into a house and caught fire had been stolen earlier in Detroit.  The driver, who has not been identified, fled the scene.

Fire officials said the car smashed into the house on Sandra Lane, near 22 Mile and Schoenherr Road just after 12 a.m.

Shelby Township Fire Marshall Steven Henion is not ready to call the fire “suspicious” as they continue their investigation, but he did say it was odd how a stolen car made into the backyard of this house.

“We are investigating this as a fire, as we do all fires. We treat them all accidental, and until we can prove otherwise, I mean… it’s an accidental fire at this time,” Henion said.

The people who live there were not at home at this time, they have been temporarily relocated to a local hotel as fire and police investigators remained at the scene, Wednesday afternoon.

Henion said there is quite a bit of fire damage to the basement.

No injuries were reported. The driver remains at large.
